As a cultural entity, The Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra seeks to strengthen the communities that it serves by providing opportunities for individuals and groups to come together and share their love of great music.

“Community Music activities…contribute to the development of economic regeneration and can enhance the quality of life for communities” (Kertz-Welzel, Philosophy of Music Education Review, 2016, p. 115).

The Claflin Hill Youth Symphonies provide opportunities for students throughout eastern Massachusetts to enhance the music education provided by our public schools with a curriculum that challenges its musicians to stretch their abilities in a supportive environment.

A recent study in The International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being proved that "working with others in the professional theater and music world was in some senses awe-inspiring" (p. 9) as it heightened a sense of self-confidence and positive identity and helped students develop goal-directed attitudes.

Parent testimonials, Holliston

Being a member of the CHYS has been such a wonderful experience for our daughter.  It has helped her grow as a musician and as an individual.

Playing with others at this level helps her strive to be a better musician, and at times, helps her push past her comfort level to see what her true abilities are. It has also given her leadership experience being the 1st trumpet in both the Orchestra and Wind Ensemble.

She has really enjoyed playing along side the adult musicians in CHSO.  It has enabled her to see what being a professional musician is really like, and she has received constructive feedback.  Overall, it has been a great confidence booster and has helped her find her true passion in life.

We are so appreciative of The Claflin Hill Youth Symphony!   This is our daughter’s 5th year with the organization.  She has learned so much from the director Paul Surapine, and her ensemble group’s leader Dimitar Petkov.  They are absolute professionals, and it is a gift for our daughter to have this experience…to play with the excellent musicians that CHYS has recruited, to have concert goals with committed weekly practices, to be led by experts in their field, executing with the bravado of the BSO, yet humbly within the constraints of volunteers and youth.  I am so impressed with CHYS…I wish I could play too!  I so much look forward to their concerts – Paul selects wonderful pieces, introduces each one with details about the piece, the composer, a story.  The CHYS is a gem!

My daughter as a violin player loves CHYS. She made lots of friends here while enjoying playing musics.

I myself get a chance to listen their rehearsal every week and witness how progress is made.

CHYS is a great place for our community.

Many thanks to the people involved in this great organization.
