Why choose the Claflin Hill Youth Symphonies…

Our tuition fees are designed to be “family affordable”  in some cases almost 50% less than many of the region’s urban youth orchestra programs!  We also offer “Multi student family” discounts!!!

Quality repertoire

CHYS horns S cropped.jpg

At CHYS, we program original orchestral and wind ensemble repertoire – NOT “dumbed down” arrangements for high school band or orchestra!  Our students work on and perform entire symphonies and college level wind ensemble works in their original versions!   We work hard, aspire high, have fun and get fulfillment from what we’ve accomplished together!

For many of our students, CHYS fills a void that exists in their public school music programs in terms of both level and quality, as well as the lack of orchestral ensembles that is a result of cutbacks in the public sector arts funding in many communities school budgets.

The CHSO/CHYS Connection . . .

Because CHYS is part of the professional Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra, our students have weekly interaction and mentorship from some of the finest professional musicians and teachers in New England.   Our CHSO mentors work with the students in sectionals through the season, as well as coach them in smaller chamber music ensembles, and frequently perform WITH their students in concert where needed!

Side By Side Concert Performance!

Each year, the entire CHYS Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble perform at the CHSO Annual Sunday Matinee concert – playing works by themselves and also “Side by Side” with the entire CHSO in a selected major repertoire piece!

Several students are also selected to perform as soloist in concerto movements on that concert with the CHSO.

Student Internship in the CHSO!

Throughout the history of both CHSO and CHYS, advanced students from our Youth Orchestra program who are going into music school upon graduation have been invited to perform as a CHYS Intern in the CHSO for entire seasons!

Last summer, FOUR students from CHYS performed for the entire summer with the Claflin Hill Symphony Summer Winds at concerts throughout the region, (and got paid as professional musicians!)

At the CHSO Season Finale on April 27, 2019, CHYS Concertmistress Brinda Venkataraman performed as soloist in Vaughan Williams “The Lark Ascending”.   CHYS Principal Trumpet Anna Damigella performed as a member of the CHSO on Third Trumpet that evening too!

CHYS – The CHSO Farm Team System!

There are presently several full time professional musicians in the CHSO who were members of the CHYS during high school, went to school and upon completion of their studies have been welcomed back as colleagues in CHSO!

Where else can a student find such a comprehensive musical education and experience that prepares them not only for music school, but for success in higher education and life beyond!!
